For the greener good...

Fluorescent T-8'sThe Bloomingdale Park District is committed to minimizing its impact on the planet and in particular, our little part of it better known as Bloomingdale. Here are a few steps the park district has undertaken to be more environmentally friendly and contribute to a more sustainable community.

Light bulbs
The park district has begun replacing ordinary light bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent T-8’s that produce significantly less greenhouse gas. The park district was able to fund this effort as a result of receiving a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Foundation.

Green sign program
Conventional building practices consume large quantities of wood, plastic, metal, cardboard, paper, water and other natural resources that lead, unnecessarily, to their depletion. The park district uses design and construction that results in the conservation of resources. One example is Erie Park, which was officially opened on June 16, 2008. It is the first park in our system to feature a sign manufactured with recycled materials.

Recycling program
E-gear such as printers, peripherals, printer cartridges and computers can send metals like gold and silver to landfills, necessitating more mining. In fact, Americans toss 133,000 computers every day. The park district recycles its electronics helping to minimize the release of toxins into the air and water.

Batteries
Americans use 3 billion batteries per year, creating 100,000 tons of waste annually! Both regular and rechargeable batteries release toxins into the waste stream. The park district encourages residents to drop off their used alkaline batteries at the Johnston Recreation Center so that they are disposed of in a manner less likely to contaminate the community.

Get involved!
Improving the sustainability of the Bloomingdale community is more fun when you can get involved with other folks with a similar interest and desire to do so. Here are a few ways you can get involved as well as groups offering more information on getting your green on:
