Parks and Facilities Improvement Updates

Springfield Park Boardwalk & BridgeSpringfield Park
Thanks to Lowe’s for donating all materials, labor and professional services required to completely replace the Springfield Park boardwalk and bridge. The project was completed in July of this year under the supervision of Robert Cavanaugh, Capital Services based in Arlington Heights. Mr. Cavanaugh and his crew have completed projects for notable television productions including a recent project on the Oprah Show. This donation resulted in a cost-savings to the park district upwards of $15,000.

The final stage of the Springfield Park improvements is currently being completed. Disc Golf, a pavilion, Horse Shoes and Bags courts, and additional pathways are under development. Improvements to Springfield Park were made possible through a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Barracudas new Records Board

On June 7, the Bloomingdale Barracudas dedicated a new records board at Cuda Cove in memory of Brian Kernes. Brian was a father of two swimmers who volunteered many hours to the swim team. The team wanted to keep Brian’s memory and spirit alive near the pool and felt that the records board was a wonderful way to achieve that. This memorial was made possible by contributions from the members of the Bloomingdale Barracudas.

JRC Gymnasium
Planned to be completed well before peak basketball season, the JRC gymnasium received a makeover replete with a fresh coat of paint, refinished gym floor surface and lines giving the gymnasium a new look and feel.

Lakeview Park
Bidding for improvements at Lakeview Park began in July 2008. Planned improvements include shoreline stabilization, construction of a new fishing pier, baseball field enhancements such as shade structures, new bleachers and player benches, new playground, new gazebo and path improvements, just to name a few. Updates can be found on the park districts website at www.bloomingdaleparks.org.

Erie Park
The Bloomingdale Park District officially welcomed the arrival of its newest family member—Erie Park. on Monday, June 16th. This new neighborhood park is located at 354 Erie Circle Drive.

The design of the .75 acre neighborhood park was created in conjunction with residents of the Eastgate Homeowner’s Association who provided ideas and suggestions at a community planning meeting in July 2007. The new park features a play structure that is age appropriate for the families in the area, a swing set including a handicapped accessible swing, picnic tables, benches and a large lawn area with a pathway leading into the park. A beloved Maple tree bookends one end of the park and is sure to invite picnics and create long-lasting memories for generations to come.

Previous Park Improvement Updates
Thanks to prudent fiscal management, community support and the sale of bonds designed not to increase taxes the Park District is in the midst of several park improvement projects. Residents are anxiously awaiting the opening of these new facilities, all of which promise to provide hours of fun and leisure opportunities for all ages. Lakeview Park
A first-draft plan of enhancements for Lakeview Park has been completed. At the invitation of the Park District, and on a picture perfect summer evening on June 13, 2007, about 30 residents came out to get a first-hand look at the plan and had the chance to share their comments with the Park District’s landscape architect Joe Brusseau of Brusseau Design Group, Board members and staff. Shoreline stabilization, native flowering prairie plantings and path improvements, are just a few of the upgrades in the plan. The Park District plans to submit this project to the State of Illinois Department of Natural Resources OSLAD Grant program.

If selected, the grant will match the funds already committed by the Park District for the improvements. We will keep residents updated on the status of the grant.

Springfield Park PlanSpringfield Park
The final design is complete and a construction contract has been awarded for the improvements to be made at Springfield Park. The planned improvements began in July 2007 and include the grading and seeding of the north section of the park in preparation for the installation of four new soccer fields, two with field lights. Also included in the plan is the addition of a nine-hole disc golf course, bocce ball courts and trail and path improvements.  Additionally, the construction of a 7000sq. foot maintenance facility is expected to be complete by the summer of 2008. Tuttle Drive and Erie Parks
The Park District acquired two new parcels of land this year and plans to develop them into cozy alcoves encouraging a sense of community and relaxation. Located on Tuttle Drive and Erie Circle, both lots are currently undeveloped. Of great concern to the Park District is that these parks echo the surrounding architectural features and landscaping of their neighboring homes. Park District officials will invite residents to learn more about the plans prior to breaking ground.

Join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony to open up our new Erie Park on June 16th at 6:00pm.  Immediately following there will be a free Family Fun Picnic featuring Steve Belliveau as he presents "Getting Excited About Science."  For more information call the Park District.
