Johnston Recreation Center
Bloomingdale Park District’s central building, the Johnston Recreation Center (JRC), was built in 1975 to house the main core of its program activities and administrative offices and has grown responsibly over time according to the needs of the community.
A gymnasium was added to the JRC in 1981 in order to meet the growing demand for indoor sport activities. Subsequent survey results led to extensive renovations during 1994-1995, including the addition of a gymnastics center, programming/preschool space, dance studio, group fitness room, and teaching kitchen. In 2011, an elevator and widened staircase were added for improved patron access.
After a successful referendum in 2016, a complete renovation of the JRC began in 2018 which included committed space for active older adult programming, improved early childhood/preschool space and enhanced security, a renovated teaching kitchen, multi-purpose space for teens and older adults, the relocation of the group fitness center, and the incorporation of a fitness center and indoor playground.
Residents were introduced to the new, modernized, and improved JRC at the Grand Re-Opening held July 13, 2019.
